Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, (presently Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 in the Olympic event. Bela Karolyi later Romanian Gymnastics Coach discovered Comaneci as she was only six years old. The first time she competed was at the national junior championships which she finished 13th in 1969. In 1970, she won. She won three golds in her debut competition in a junior pre-Olympic meeting in 1972 for communist bloc countries. Between 1973 and 1974 she won the junior all-round champion. In 1975 she was awarded 4 gold and 1 silver at her first senior international competition. Lyudmila Torishcheva was a five-time European Champion. The year was 1976 when she took home the American Cup at the New York City Olympics and became the first woman in history to dismount the bars in parallel with the double backward salto.
